Edinson Volquez has been suspended 50 games for PED use. Volquez has stated that the substance he was taking was being used to help he and his wife have a baby together. Volquez was outstanding in 2008 going 17-6 while posting an ERA of 3.21 while striking out 206 batters in just 196 innings. Volquez struggled last year while battling elbow injuries and ended up missing most of the the 09 season due to Tommy John surgery. While he was expected to spend most of the 2010 season recovering and rehabilitating from the surgery, Volquez had planned on returning sometime in August. It appears as if the suspension will start immediately even though Volquez is on the 60 day disabled list which I think is unfair. This basically means that the only place Volquez will get hurt is his wallet as he will not be paid for the time he is suspended. Since he is already out, he won't actually be missing anytime though. These things blow my mind. You are a major league baseball player with the best doctors in the entire world at your disposal...wouldn't it make sense to check with the doctors or even Major League Baseball for that matter, before you put any unknown substance into your body. I just don't get it.
