NBA Draft Lottery (Click Here to Leave/Read Comments)

New Jersey Nets owner, Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, is introduced to the media during a news conference in New York
New Nets Owner Mikhail Prokhorov Suffers First Loss As A Net
Let me think…what’s the best way to put this…THE NETS GOT SCREWED!!! I know most of you out there don’t really care about the Nets, but me, my dad, and the other 50 Net fans out there think the Lottery is an absolute joke. How is it possible that a team could lose 70 games and not get the first pick in the draft? To make matters worse, we didn’t even get the second pick. That’s right folks…after a miserable season in which the Nets made history for their losing ways, they now have the Number 3 pick to show for it. I understand that the Lottery is in place to keep teams from tanking games at the end of seasons, but there has to be a better way to do this. Even if the answer is to simply increase the odds of the worst team getting the first pick that would make me feel better. The Nets could not have done any worse than picking fourth, but they only had a 25% chance of getting the first pick. And here is another questions…why do 14 teams have a chance at the number 1 selection, regardless of how remote the chances of them winning the lottery are? Is it really necessary for almost half the league to have a shot at the number one pick? Complete joke…

While you might not care now, because it’s only the Nets, this lottery situation needs to get fixed at some point. It might be your team that gets screwed one day. Now, sitting with the third pick, the Nets will most likely choose from Derrick Favors, DeMarcus Cousins, or Wesley Johnson all of which are big men. Why does this matter? Most of the free agents from this year’s incredible class are big man so now the lousy draft position could also affect the Nets in the free agent market. This could also hurt the Nets’ chances of signing Lebron James not that I think they had the best shot anyway but still…THIS SUCKS!!!

Now that I got that out of my system, let me take a more positive outlook on this disaster. The Nets do have one of the best talent evaluators ever in Rod Thorn. They also have a new owner who has a ton of money and seems to be dead set on winning. I am 100% confident in Rod Thorn and I think he will definitely make the best of this situation. The Nets have a lot of young talent and a lot of different pieces they can use to make trades and allow Thorn to get creative. They could even take the path the Celtics took when they got screwed in the lottery and trade their pick. The Celtics turned that draft into the team that you see today with Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett, and after getting hosed in the 07 Lottery, they won the championship in ’08. I think the Nets will actually be pretty good next year and while I’m not going to go jumping off a bridge about this lottery thing, I still think it’s a complete disgrace and the NBA needs to do something about it as quickly as possible. Let us know if you have any creative suggestions on how to fix the Lottery.
