This Saturday night, Shane Mosley (46-5, 39KOs) will put his WBA Welterweight title on the line against the undefeated Floyd Mayweather (40-0, 25KOs). These are two of the best fighters in the world right now and so far, this can easily be considered the bout of the year. Most experts would have Mayweather and Mosley ranked at 2 and 3 on the list of best pound for pound fighters behind the current king, Manny Pacquiao and boxing fans have wanted to see this fight for a long time. While Floyd is the big favorite in the fight, I’m very interested to see how he handles Mosley’s speed and power. If you go back and look at all of Mayweather’s past opponents, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone with Mosley’s speed except for maybe Zab Judah who actually gave Mayweather some problems at times. Mosley is also extremely strong and is a huge knockout puncher in the Welterweight division. Because Mayweather is such a defensive genius and rarely gets caught flush with a big punch, we don’t really know what kind of chin Floyd has. That being said, I’m very curious to see what happens if Mosley can get through the defense and land a big punch.
Mosley, age 38, hasn’t fought since January of 2009 when he showed no signs of slowing down on his way to a dominating win over Antonio Margarito. While he may not be the favorite here, Mosley is an elite Welterweight with a very impressive resume, perhaps even better than that of Mayweather. While Mayweather is a defensive master mind, Mosley is the type of fighter that will take a punch to give one, and I think while he must be aggressive, he must also have a plan. We saw what Mayweather can do to a fighter who just comes straight ahead when he floored Ricky Hatton a few years back. With that in mind, I think Shane will have to do everything he can to throw off Mayweather’s rhythm and timing, and see if he can set Floyd up for that big shot.
Mayweather’s last fight came in September of 09 when he trounced Juan Manuel Marquez in his first fight back off a brief retirement. As I said earlier, Mayweather may be the best defensive fighter ever to put on gloves. In addition to his defense, Mayweather’s hand speed is second to none and he will most likely try to take advantage of this by staying on the outside and counterpunching. In order to do this, Mayweather will try to stretch the ring in an effort to stay outside and keep distance between himself and Mosley. Aside from his speed and defense, Floyd is an extremely smart fighter whose strategizing skills will certainly come in handy against Shane. One thing about Floyd is he has never been in a knockdown, drag out brawl mostly because he never lets a fight get to that point. I’m sure we will see more of the same here as Mayweather will be looking for Mosley to try and land the big shot which may provide an opening to do some damage.
As usual, Mayweather has done everything he possibly can to make himself the bad guy in this fight spouting off to whoever will listen about how great he is and how he is going to beat Mosley. Mosley on the other hand has taken a completely opposite approach choosing not to get involved in a war of words. If you’ve been watching the HBO series 24/7, which follows the fighters in their training camps, you have seen how completely different the two men really are. While Floyd runs off to the mall with stacks of hundred dollar bills, Shane stays at home with his team for quiet dinners and prayers. So who do I think will win? While Mayweather is a big favorite at 4-1, I don’t see this being a completely one sided fight. I think Mayweather will most likely outlast and out point Mosley but I wouldn’t be shocked if Mosley found a way to win. I am very conflicted about the fight though. On the one hand I want Mosley to beat the crap out of Mayweather because of his loud, obnoxious, cocky ways but at the same time, part of me wants to see Mayweather win. I’m a huge boxing fan (I know there aren’t many of us), and Mayweather is boxing. He’s good for the sport and anytime he fights, people come to watch even if they don’t follow boxing. It’s kind of like Tiger Woods. I talk to people all the time who say that they never watch golf unless Tiger is playing. Mayweather is kind of the same way. In the end, as long as it’s a good fight I’ll be happy.
